Canadian Steel Producers Congratulate PM Carney and Call on All Parliamentarians to Stand Up for Canadian Steel

April 29, 2025, Ottawa, ON – Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), released the following statement after the results of Canada’s 45th federal election held yesterday:

“Congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal Party of Canada on forming Canada’s next federal government. As the new government, you will need to act with determination and expediency to protect the fabric of our country and our economy from unprecedented challenges. Canada’s steel producers stand ready to work with you in the important economic restructuring ahead to ensure a sustainable future for our industry and workforce.

“On March 12, the U.S. Administration placed an unjustified 25 per cent tariff on Canadian steel, along with further tariffs on many other industries that rely on Canadian steel like automobiles, auto parts and more. As risks to our collective future and economic well-being rise, we need swift action at our border through additional tariffs and new CBSA resources to keep unfairly trade goods from entering Canada.

“Canadian steel producers are seeking fundamental changes to government procurement at all levels of government to ensure that Canadian steel is prioritized for use in all publicly funded infrastructure projects across the country.

“Finally, as we pursue our goal of decarbonization, the CSPA seeks a new partnership with the government that enacts critical changes to carbon pricing or provides greater autonomy for provinces to adapt their systems.

“We must take swift action to stand strong for Canadian steel and give us a fighting chance. Our industry’s leaders in Canada look forward to collaborating with all Parliamentarians on this critical work.”
