Canadian Steel Producers Association Welcomes Government of Canada’s Updated Measures to Support our Industry

July 16th, 2025, Ottawa, ON – Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), released the following statement:

“The Canadian Steel Producers Association appreciates the Prime Minister’s announcement today to tighten up trade measures previously announced to support our industry.

“Reducing quota levels on non-free trade partners to 50% of 2024 levels and imposing quotas on free trade partners at 2024 levels with a 50% over quota tariff rate are steps in the right direction. We are grateful that the government has acted swiftly and taken this first response to improve these measures to support our industry in Canada and strengthen our domestic market.

“By also imposing 25% tariffs on steel products melted and poured in China, Canada is a global leader in taking real action to combat the fundamental and disruptive challenge of steel overcapacity.”

“We welcome the explicit actions the government has taken on prioritizing domestic steel in federal projects. We aim to see similar levels of commitment from all levels of government throughout Canada”

“There were also significant increases in financial supports announced today for the industry in our time of need. While we are still assessing the details of these changes, we appreciate the government’s support as the consequences are devastating from the unjustified trade action by the United States administration.

“The CSPA will continue to collaborate with the government to monitor the rapidly evolving situation to ensure Canada can continue to protect the integrity of the domestic market.
