November 5th, 2025, Ottawa, ON – Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), released the following statement:
“The CSPA welcomes the Federal Budget’s confirmation of the government’s vision to foster investment, develop significant projects and strengthen transportation corridors to help improve Canada’s economic future.
“A centerpiece of this vision is the announcement of the new Policy on Prioritizing Canadian Materials in Federal Procurement that will drive forward opportunity for the domestic steel sector in the medium to longer term. This new policy will prioritize domestic steel in federal procurement, and we urge all levels of government across the country to adopt similar policies.
“On the short-term actions we need as a sector, we welcome the reaffirmation of the support tools for industries such as steel that are impacted by the tariffs. However, we remain steadfast in our need to urgently recapture our domestic steel market share to 80% - 85% in line with our key trading partners of the United States and the European Union. To achieve this, we continue to urgently call for further measures at our border.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the government on moving these critical steps forward as quickly as possible.”
The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) is the national voice of all primary steel producers and some of the country’s largest steel consumers. Our 17 members supply the essential materials to key sectors such as automotive, energy, construction, and transportation—driving jobs and economic growth across North America. The CSPA advocates for a competitive and sustainable business environment that strengthens the steel sector and its supply chains.
