CSPA Applauds Refreshed Support for the Domestic Steel Industry

November 26th, 2025, Ottawa, ON– Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), released the following statement:

“The Canadian Steel Producers Association applauds the Government of Canada’s announcement today to better support our steel industry. We have weathered a challenging year, and we’re grateful for this renewed comprehensive package for Canada’s steel producers and the tens of thousands of workers who make up our industry.

“The measures announced today, particularly the action at the border to tighten Canada’s steel imports, will provide much needed relief for our producers. These measures are necessary to level the playing field to stabilize our domestic industry, support our workers and our Canadian customers.

“Likewise, we are pleased to see the Government of Canada take meaningful steps on addressing steel containing goods entering the country. This transformative move recognizes that dumped steel is often making its way into Canada through downstream products and impacting our customers.

“We are pleased to see the announcement of a dedicated steel compliance team at the Canada Border Service Agency to ensure better enforcement of our trade measures. CBSA plays a crucial first line of defence in protecting the Canadian market from unfair trade practices.

“Today’s refreshed package recognizes the scale of the challenge we are facing as this trade war endures. By further tightening and broadening border measures, providing support for workers and lowering freight rail rates, Canada is serious about protecting its domestic industry from the ongoing overcapacity crisis and that the country is prepared to take action to protect our market.

“We look forward to working with the government to ensure timely implementation and enforcement efforts that are key to maximizing the effectiveness of these new measures."
