Canadian Steel Producers Respond to American Tariff Escalation

August 22nd, 2026, OTTAWA, ON — Today, the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) issue the following statement responding to the newest round of tariffs from United States of America:

Today’s newest tariffs are a concerning escalation from the Trump Administration. Canada and the United States have enjoyed more than thirty years of fully integrated trade and the Canadian and U.S. steel industries have benefited from that relationship. The breakdown in negotiations is regrettable.

The current circumstances present uncertainty and distinct challenges for Canada’s steel producers, but no deal is better than a bad deal, and we maintain our confidence in Canada’s negotiating team and their tireless work to land an arrangement that is beneficial to Canadian steel and the Canadian economy.

We will continue to work with the Government of Canada to ensure Canada’s broader trade regime is fully leveraged to counter unfair trade practices and provide Canadian steel producers with as level a playing field as possible.
