October 1st, 2026, Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Steel Producers Association issued this release following United States Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer’s statement at the conclusion of the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC). The Global Forum, facilitated by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), is a venue for Canada to partner with the United States and other like-minded countries committed to confronting excess steel capacity.
“The Canadian Steel Producers Association welcomes yesterday’s development aiming to combat excess steel capacity. The Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity is renewing efforts to halt excess capacity steel imports from undermining our domestic producers.” said Blair Dickerson, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association.
In recent years, Canada has been steadfast in implementing measures that address the scourge of excess steel capacity. However, excess capacity remains one of the most complex and pressing issues facing our domestic steel producers, and this global problem requires multilateral cooperation. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Canada as it engages further on this important trade issue.
The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) is the national voice of Canada’s primary steel producers and some of the country’s largest steel consumers. Our 17 members supply essential materials to sectors including automotive, energy, construction, and transportation—supporting jobs, economic growth, and resilient supply chains. A strong domestic steel industry is critical to Canada’s economic sovereignty, ensuring reliable access to materials essential to our infrastructure, strategic industries, and national resilience.
