The Canadian Steel Producers Association Welcomes Additional Support Package from Canadian and Ontario Governments

October 21st, 2026, Ottawa, ON – Today’s announcement is an important show of support for Canadian steelworkers, their families and the communities that depend on them. Canadian steelmakers have faced unprecedented pressure from U.S. tariffs and global market disruption, and today’s announcement will help producers, protect jobs and keep investing in the future of Canadian steel.

The $5.22 billion Joint Steel Action Fund will help steel producers retool, modernize operations, and invest in the future so that they can expand the scope of products to better serve the Canadian market. The CSPA has long advocated for government to be leading the way in sourcing domestically. Therefore, we welcome the close alignment between the Buy Canadian and Buy Ontario policies to prioritize steel for publicly funded projects to ensure that investments support workers and businesses.

Further, we applaud the enhanced trade remedies and compliance measures at the Canadian Border Services Agency to address foreign steel dumping. This is an important step toward ensuring a level playing field for Canadian producers.

The establishment of a Canada-Ontario Steel Task Force will examine ways to reduce shipment costs and make targeted adjustments to support our industry. Addressing these cost pressures and improving the effectiveness of trade measures is critical to strengthening the resilience of Ontario’s steel supply chain.

These measures represent important steps toward supporting our steel industry, protecting good-paying jobs, and ensuring our sector remains a competitive destination for investment and advanced manufacturing. We look forward to working with both levels of government to ensure these commitments translate into lasting results for the industry and the workers and communities who depend on it.
